Two Days Sahara Tour – Itinerary

Day 1 –  From Roman Monuments to Desert Landscapes

El Jem – Roman Amphitheatre

Your journey begins with an early morning pick-up from Sousse, Monastir, Hammamet, or Mahdia. The first stop is El Jem, home to one of the largest and best-preserved Roman amphitheatres in the world. Built in the 3rd century, this UNESCO World Heritage Site offers a glimpse into ancient gladiator history. A visit to the nearby Archaeological Museum, featuring stunning Roman mosaics, may also be included.

Matmata – Troglodyte Homes

The tour continues south to Matmata, a Berber village known for its traditional underground homes. Dug into the earth to provide natural insulation from the desert heat, these troglodyte dwellings represent a unique form of desert adaptation. You’ll visit one of these homes and meet local residents.

Douz – The Gateway to the Sahara

In the afternoon, you’ll arrive in Douz, a desert town often called the “Gateway to the Sahara.” Here, you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy a camel ride across the dunes at sunset (included). Dinner and overnight stay are provided at a desert lodge or hotel near Douz.

Day 2: Oases, Desert Adventure, and Sacred Cities

Chott El Jerid – Salt Lake Sunrise

The second day begins with a sunrise stop at Chott El Jerid, Tunisia’s largest salt lake. As the sun rises, the salt flats reflect the changing colors of the sky and distant Atlas Mountains, creating a surreal and breathtaking view.

Tozeur – Oasis and Local Farming Experience

In Tozeur, you’ll visit a local agricultural oasis, where dates, olives, pomegranates, and vegetables are cultivated using traditional irrigation methods. This stop offers a look at how communities thrive in an otherwise arid environment.

4×4 Desert Safari – Ong Jemel & Star Wars Locations

From Tozeur, switch to 4×4 jeeps for an off-road desert adventure. The first highlight is Ong Jemel (“Camel’s Neck”), a striking rock formation that served as a filming location in Star Wars. This part of the desert feels otherworldly, with towering dunes and dramatic scenery.

Chebika – Mountain Oasis

The jeep tour continues to Chebika, a mountain oasis nestled among cliffs and palm trees. Known for its clear springs and waterfalls, Chebika was once a Roman outpost and today offers panoramic views and insight into Berber village life.

Kairouan – The Holy City

On the way back north, the final stop is in Kairouan, Tunisia’s first Islamic city and the fourth holiest in Islam. You’ll enjoy a panoramic view of the Great Mosque, one of the most significant Islamic monuments in North Africa. The visit also includes a stop at a traditional carpet house, where you’ll learn about the rich heritage of Tunisian weaving and tapestries.

Arrival back to your hotel in Sousse, Monastir, Hammamet, or Mahdia is scheduled in the late afternoon or early evening.
